Top DVDs Released in 2010

From , former About.com Guide

The year 2010 has seen the release of some outstanding DVDs, and I've made a list of those I found to be the best. The list is comprised mostly of movies, but I’ve included a couple of exceptional television series on DVD.  The selection criteria included the artistic merit of the films/television series, the enhancement value of the bonus materials, and the picture and sound quality. The list is ordered by DVD release date.

'Inception' DVD

© Warner Bros. Entertainment

Christopher Nolan (Memento, The Dark Knight) wrote and directed Inception, a big-budget film featuring dazzling visual effects and action sequences. The star is Leonardo DiCaprio, and the fine supporting cast includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Ken Watanabe, Cillian Murphy, Marion Cotillard and Michael Caine. At first viewing, the plot is difficult to follow, but an attentive second viewing reveals it to be fairly straightforward. The Inception DVD contains four short featurettes. In "The Inception of Inception," writer-director Christopher Nolan talks about developing the movie over a 10-year period. The other three featurettes are about technical aspects of the film.

'The Hurt Locker' DVD

'The Hurt Locker' DVD Cover Art© Summit Entertainment

Essentially a character-driven drama, The Hurt Locker  nevertheless has plenty of shootouts and explosions. But the emphasis is not so much on action as on suspense and tension. The story takes place during the Iraq War, but the film doesn't address the issue of whether or not the war can be justified. Instead, the focus is on the day-to-day lives of three American soldiers sent to Iraq to do a specific job. The three are portrayed by little-known actors who give fine performances. The movie is fictional, but the filmmakers' style and attention to detail create a feeling of authenticity. The DVD includes an excellent audio commentary by director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal.

'Che' (Criterion Collection) DVD

'Che' DVD Cover Art© Criterion Collection
Benicio del Toro gives a superb performance as the title character in Che (2008), Steven Soderbergh's idiosyncratic Spanish-language biopic about Marxist revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara (1928-1967). Che played a major role in the Cuban Revolution, and pop culture came to use a stylized image of his face as a symbol to convey an anti-Establishment attitude. More than four decades after his death, Che remains a controversial historical figure. Che is a four-and-a-half-hour-long film comprised of two parts of approximately equal duration. Soderbergh envisioned a theatrical showing as consisting of the full movie, with the two parts separated by a 15-minute intermission.

Rossellini's War Trilogy (Criterion Collection) DVD

© Criterion Collection
In 1940s Italy, filmmakers began making gritty movies in a style known as Italian neorealism, and one of its pioneers was Roberto Rossellini. Three of his movies are usually cited as key exemplars of the style: Rome Open City (1945), Paisan (1946) and Germany Year Zero (1948). Collectively called the War Trilogy, all deal with World War II and its immediate aftermath. Set in 1944, Rome Open City is a low-budget propaganda piece done with great artistry. Paisan is about the 1943-44 liberation of Italy as seen in six episodes. Berlin Year Zero is set two years after World War II, and the film will always be remembered for its 1947 location shots of the great German city in ruins.

'Journey to Italy' DVD

In his documentary My Voyage to Italy, Martin Scorsese talks at some length about Roberto Rossellini's Journey to Italy. Scorsese refers to the film by its alternate titles and calls the movie "one of my favorites" and "a rich, moving experience," and asserts that "it had a profound effect on film history. Rossellini's fame derives mainly from his work in the 1940s as one of the founding fathers of Italian neorealism, but he kept evolving as a filmmaker. Journey to Italy represents a significant departure from his earlier movies. In terms of cinema history, Journey to Italy's place is as a forerunner to the avant-garde films of the French New Wave and Michelangelo Antonioni.

'A Serious Man' DVD

© Focus Features/Universal Studios Home Entertainment
Written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, A Serious Man  is laugh-out-loud-funny at times, yet the worldview embodied by the film is bleak. For some viewers, the edgy humor will be too unsettling, but for many others, it will be cathartic. However, there can be no argument that the movie is thoughtful and humanistic. A Serious Man takes place in 1967 in the tight-knit Jewish community of an unnamed Midwestern city. The protagonist, Larry Gopnik, is a memorable character. The DVD containing A Serious Man provides three extras with a total runtime of about 33 minutes. The most worthwhile is probably "Becoming Serious," a making-of that allows us to hear from Joel and Ethan Coen.

Orson Welles Legend Collection DVD

Orson Welles (1915-1985) was one of the great all-time filmmakers, but in the US some of his movies have been difficult to see in recent years. But that has changed with the availability of Orson Welles: The Legend Collection, a well-priced six-disc DVD set containing half a dozen of his films: Citizen Kane (1941), The Magnificent Ambersons (1942), Macbeth (1948), Mr. Arkadin (1955), The Trial (1962), Chimes at Midnight (1965). The excitement here is the inclusion of The Magnificent Ambersons and Chimes at Midnight. Ambersons has never previously been released on DVD in the US, and Chimes could be obtained on DVD only via imports such as the version from Brazil.

'Up in the Air' DVD

© Paramount Home Entertainment

Co-written and directed by Jason Reitman, Up in the Air is quite contemporary in some ways, while in others it is reminiscent of older films like Billy Wilder's The Apartment (1960). George Clooney is superb playing Up in the Air's protagonist, and he and his two costars, Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick, all received Academy Award nominations for their performances. The film also got Oscar nods for Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture. The DVD provides a lively and informative feature-length audio commentary by co-writer/director Jason Reitman, and he is supported by director of photography Eric Steelberg and first assistant director Jason Blumenfeld.

'An Education' DVD

© Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

Nominated for three Academy Awards — Best Picture, Best Actress (Carey Mulligan) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Nick Hornby) — An Education  is a charming British independent film. Carey Mulligan is brilliant in the role of the teenage protagonist, and she is supported by a fine cast that includes Peter Sarsgaard, Alfred Molina, Dominic Cooper, Rosamund Pike and Emma Thompson. The story came from Lynn Barber's memoir in a literary journal about when she was 16 and had an affair with a man more than twice her age. Then the filmmakers turned Barber's slight tale into a reflection of society's transformation from the drab 1950s to the swinging 1960s.

'Freud' DVD

'Freud' DVD Cover Art© BBC/Warner Home Video
In 1984 the BBC aired for the first time an engrossing and enlightening six-hour miniseries titled Freud that chronicled the life of Sigmund Freud (1856-1939). Freud is a richly textured character study of a complex man. Early on, Freud is depicted as an ambitious young neurologist who champions the medical use of cocaine. But he soon turns to treating psychosomatic illness and is shown interacting with an outlandish patient, an ugly, wealthy baroness who is romantically attracted to him. One of the best things about the miniseries is the artful way it shows Freud developing his big ideas, such as the unconscious mind, sexual desire, repressed memories and dream interpretation.
