'Tetro' DVD

'Tetro' DVD Cover Art© Lionsgate
Written and directed by Francis Ford Coppola, Tetro is an idiosyncratic, resolutely un-Hollywood film. Coppola deliberately gives his story implausible twists and over-the-top theatricality as he works some of the same psychological territory as Eugene O'Neill and Tennessee Williams. The movie is in a dreamlike black-and-white, interspersed occasionally with brief reveries or fantasies in color. The tale takes place in Argentina, but the dialogue is mostly in English. The Tetro DVD provides a feature-length audio commentary, but it's only sporadically interesting and occasionally informative. The commentary is mostly by writer-director Francis Ford Coppola.

'Life' DVD

© BBC/Warner Home Video
Life is essentially about the struggle for survival. The series mainly shows a large number of atypical examples of animals obtaining food, predators and prey, mating, parenting and adaptation. The series hopscotches around the globe, showing footage shot on all seven continents. There are something like 150 vignettes, each of which averages only three or four minutes. The presentation is choppy. Nature isn't romanticized in Life, and some scenes are unpleasant. One of these is where three cheetah brothers, who have learned to hunt as a team, bring down an ostrich. Another shows a big male hamadryas baboon punishing one of the females in his harem.

'The White Ribbon' DVD

'The White Ribbon' DVD Cover Art© Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

Winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes and the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, The White Ribbon was also nominated for two Academy Awards, including Best Cinematography. The movie is a German-language drama written and directed by Michael Haneke. Moody and mesmerizing, The White Ribbon is a deliberately paced, visually stunning black-and-white period piece. Its story is not difficult to follow, but be advised that it is unsettling and does not provide the sense of closure. There's a lot of ambiguity in The White Ribbon. But Haneke has created a memorable portrait of a repressive patriarchal society that looks well-ordered from the outside, yet is rotting away from the inside.

'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' DVD

'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo'© Music Box Films Home Entertainment
The late Swedish author Stieg Larsson wrote a series of three novels collectively known as the Millennium Trilogy. The books have been made into three Swedish-language films, and the movie under discussion here — the first in that series — is known in English as The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. An American version of this movie, which will also have this title, is scheduled to be released in 2012. There are many good things about The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, but the most striking is its central female character, Lisbeth Salander, played by actress Noomi Rapace. Lisbeth is a violent young woman, and one of the most fascinating aspects of the story is discovering how she got the way she is.

'The Kids Are All Right' DVD

'The Kids Are All Right' DVD Cover© Universal Studios Home Entertainment

Julianne Moore, Annette Bening and Mark Ruffalo give fine performances in The Kids Are All Right, a critically acclaimed comedy-drama co-written and directed by Lisa Cholodenko (Laurel Canyon, High Art). The film's storyline centers on a marital crisis, but the twist is that the marriage is between two women. That idea is problematic, but Cholodenko and her co-writer, Stuart Blumberg, created interesting characters who are sympathetic, but flawed, and those characters are brilliantly brought to life by the talented cast. This is a movie with big laughs. The DVD includes Cholodenko's feature-length commentary. She covers everything from writing the script to casting to the shoot to post-production.
