A lot of people are eagerly awaiting the Fall 2006 DVD movie releases. Some enjoyed these films so much on the big screen, they want to see them again at home. Others missed these movies in theaters and want to catch them for the first time on DVD. While some of these films were panned by a majority of critics, viewers have their own ideas about what they want to watch. In order of release date, here are some of the most-anticipated DVD movie releases for Fall 2006.
Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen return for the third in the series of action movies based on Marvel Comics that began with
X-Men (2000) and
X2: X-Men United (2003). The premise remains that certain humans are mutants with special powers, but many ordinary people want to rid the world of the mutants. This time around someone has come up with a "cure" for mutants, but some of them don't want to be "cured." DVD release date: October 3, 2006
Adam Sandler is the star of this high-concept comedy. Sandler plays Michael Newman, a workaholic architect who has little time for his family. Then one day he obtains a magical universal remote that enables him to manipulate his environment much like a DVD: he can mute sounds, fast-forward through unpleasant moments, revisit scenes in his past, etc. But eventually Michael learns a life lesson. DVD release date: October 10, 2006
Adapted from a comic strip, this is a computer-animated comedy. Voices heard include those of Bruce Willis, Garry Shandling, Steve Carell, Wanda Sykes, William Shatner and others. The story centers around a group of various forest-dwelling animals going over a hedge to forage for food in a new housing development. The forest dwellers find suburbia to be enticing, but puzzling and hazardous to their well-being. DVD release date: October 17, 2006
Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn portray Chicago residents who initially fall in love, but spend most of the movie having difficulty even tolerating each other. Gary (Vaughn) operates a tour bus company, while Brooke (Aniston) works in an upscale art gallery. They meet at a Cubs game and soon buy a nice condo together. But their relationship degenerates into constant bickering. However, neither of them is willing to move out of the condo. DVD release date: October 17, 2006
Tom Cruise reprises his role as agent Ethan Hunt in this actioner, the third in the series that began with
Mission: Impossible (1996) and
Mission: Impossible II (2000). Hunt's assignment this time around is to go after a malevolent international arms dealer named Owen Davian (Philip Seymour Hoffman), and things get personal when Hunt's fiancée is abducted by Davian. The story takes us to Berlin, the Vatican, Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Shanghai. DVD release date: October 30, 2006
Cars is an animated comedy-adventure about Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson), a racecar that does a lot of damage in Radiator Springs, a Route 66 town that's home to a number of colorful talking motor vehicles. Other actors whose voices are heard include Paul Newman, Bonnie Hunt, Larry the Cable Guy, Tony Shalhoub, Cheech Marin and George Carlin.
Cars was a big box-office hit in theaters and can be enjoyed by the whole family. DVD release date: November 7, 2006

The Da Vinci Code stars Tom Hanks, Audrey Tautou and Ian McKellen. While in Paris, Harvard professor Dr. Robert Langdon (Hanks) is summoned to the Louvre, where a curator has been murdered. Langdon becomes an innocent man on the run as he tries to unravel the bizarre clues surrounding the crime. His search for the truth raises issues about Mary Magdalene and the Holy Grail. There were four Superman movies years ago, and
Superman Returns brings back the Man of Steel with different actors in the key roles: Brandon Routh as Clark Kent/Superman, Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane and Kevin Spacey as the villain Lex Luthor. The new movie finds Superman returning to Metropolis after an absence, and Clark gets his old reporter's job back. But now Lois has a son and a fiancé, while Lex Luthor is up to yet another diabolical scheme. DVD release date: November 28, 2006
This box-office smash hit is the sequel to
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), and Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley are all back. This time around pirate captain Jack Sparrow (Depp) searches for the fabled Dead Man's Chest. The engaged couple Will Turner (Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Knightley) get caught up in Jack's adventures, including tangling with Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) and fighting a monstrous sea beast. DVD release date: December 5, 2006
Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway star in this adaptation of Lauren Weisberger's best-selling novel. When fresh-faced Andy Sachs (Hathaway) graduates from Northwestern, she goes to New York and takes a job as an assistant to Miranda Priestly (Streep), the tyrannical editor of a Vogue-like fashion magazine. Miranda makes Andy's life miserable, but Streep creates a memorable character, and viewers get an opportunity to see fabulous clothing and accessories. DVD release date: December 12, 2006
