I enjoyed this spoof of reality TV shows such as "Cops," even though the humor was uneven. I found myself laughing heartily during some episodes, but merely chuckling while watching some of the others. Of course, unevenness is more forgivable given the episodic nature of a TV series.
I have to admit "RENO 911" is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. But, that being said, I got a lot of laughs out of this three-disc DVD set. I recommend it with the following caveat: "RENO 911!" is definitely for grownups that don't mind humor that's politically incorrect and low-brow at times.
The three-disc DVD set is not rated, but carries the parental advisory that follows. Explicit Content Warning: This program is recommended for mature audiences only. It contains adult language and situations. Also, be advised, that blurs from the original broadcast remain intact, although the language is uncensored.
The special features include audio commentaries on selected episodes, alternate/deleted scenes, and a "Drug Arrest Prevention Seminar," featuring a live performance by the cast at HBO's 2004 U.S. Comedy Arts Festival. The "Drug Arrest Prevention Seminar" was the special feature I thought was the most enjoyable, even though it was only mildly amusing and not as much fun as the episodes of the actual series. Frankly, I found watching the alternate/deleted scenes tedious, but it did help boost my admiration for how hard improvisational comedy must be. Some slight variations of the scenes that aired in the episodes just didn't come together quite as well as others. The process of creating "RENO 911!" must require a lot of patience.
For me, the best part of "RENO 911! The Complete Second Season - Uncensored!" was the entertainment value of the episodes themselves. I wouldnt blame anyone for skipping over the special features, although the more ardent fans of "RENO 911!" will probably enjoy them better than I did.
