October 20, 2009 - New DVD and Video Releases:'Blood: The Last Vampire' DVD
This English-language martial arts-vampire hybrid relies heavily on the charisma of its good-looking leading lady, Korean actress Gianna (aka Jeon Ji-hyun). The story takes place circa 1970 at an American military base in Japan, where vampires go on the rampage. Gianna portrays Saya, a 400-year-old half-human, half-vampire samurai who looks like a Japanese teenager. She drinks bottled blood and has swordfights with the vampires. Saya tries to protect the American general's daughter (Allison Miller), particularly against the evil Onigen (Japanese model and actress Koyuki).
'Cheri' DVD
Michelle Pfeiffer stars in this historical romantic drama adapted from Colette's novels Cheri and The Last of Cheri. In the film, Pfeiffer is reunited with director Stephen Frears and screenwriter Christopher Hampton, the same team who did Dangerous Liaisons. Set in Belle Epoque Paris, Cheri boasts pretty locations, lavish sets and elegant costumes. Lea (Pfeiffer) is a middle-aged courtesan who has a lengthy romantic relationship with a much younger man (Rupert Friend), but things get complicated when his mother (Kathy Bates) arranges for him to marry a young woman.
'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' DVD
This actioner is the second movie in the series begun by Transformers (2007), and Michael Bay returns as director, while actors Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel and Tyrese Gibson reprise their roles. The franchise is based on Hasbro toys having movable parts so each toy can be changed back and forth between a humanoid action figure and a model of something like a car, truck or airplane. As was the first film, Revenge of the Fallen is about humans and good Transformers called Autobots fighting colossal battles against evil Transformers known as Decepticons.
