September 22, 2009 - New DVD and Video Releases:
'Battle for Terra' DVD
This animated sci-fi adventure movie features well-known actors voicing the characters. Terra is a peaceful planet where the inhabitants resemble big tadpoles and swim through the atmosphere as if it were liquid. The story involves an alien invasion by Earthlings, who have ruined their own planet and are seeking to take over another, leading to war. Mala (voice of Evan Rachel Wood) is a young female on Terra who befriends the human fighter pilot Jim Stanton (voice of Luke Wilson). Other voices heard are Brian Cox, James Garner, Chris Evans and David Cross.
'Ghosts of Girlfriends Past' DVD
Matthew McConaughey stars in this romantic comedy, and he is supported by Jennifer Garner and Michael Douglas. Connor Mead (McConaughey) is a well-to-do fashion photographer who has bedded many women. But at his brother's wedding, the spirit of his deceased uncle (Douglas, playing a Don Juan reminiscent of Hollywood producer Robert Evans) makes him reexamine his past romantic relationships. Connor gradually comes to realize that the girl he let get away was his childhood sweetheart, Jenny Perotti (Garner), who is at the wedding as maid of honor.
'Observe and Report' DVD
Seth Rogen stars in this dark, disturbing comedy that pushes the envelope and makes viewers uncomfortable. In previous roles, Rogen has been lovable, but here his character is rude and violent. He plays Ronnie Barnhardt, a psychologically unstable security guard at a suburban shopping mall who lives with his drunkard mother. Ronnie gets involved in a case involving a flasher, and a police detective (Ray Liotta) is brought in. Also, Ronnie has a crush on a cosmetics salesgirl (Anna Faris), and there's a scene of near date rape. The film has gross-out humor and a perverse sensibility.
