May 12, 2009 - New DVD and Video Releases:
1. 'Passengers' DVD
Anne Hathaway and Patrick Wilson star in this drama that got only a limited theatrical release. The story is more or less like those by M. Night Shyamalan and relies on a twist. The premise is that a horrific commercial jet crash kills everyone aboard except five passengers, and Claire (Hathaway) is the therapist called in to counsel the survivors. As one (Wilson) of the five tries to romance Claire, others disappear, and mysterious strangers show up outside her window. Also, there's a nosy neighbor (Dianne Wiest), and a disturbing airline industry guy keeps popping up.
2. 'Taken' DVD
Liam Neeson stars as a vigilante hero in this slick, hyperkinetic, noisy actioner that was co-written and produced by Luc Besson. Neeson portrays Bryan Mills, a former black ops CIA operative. Mills is divorced and has neglected to keep a close relationship with his teenage daughter Kim, but hopes to make up for that now that he has retired. But Kim and her friend travel to Paris for a summer vacation, and there she is kidnapped by an Albanian gang that plans to sell her to wealthy Arabs. That's when Mills flies into action, using his CIA connections and training to fight the bad guys.
3. 'Underworld: Rise of the Lycans' DVD
This is the third installment in the franchise about the feud between vampires and werewolves, the previous two having been Underworld (2003) and Underworld: Evolution (2006). The lycans are the werewolves in the franchise's terminology, and Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is a prequel to the earlier movies and goes back hundreds of years to explain the origin of the feud. In the 2009 film, Bill Nighy returns as the vampire Viktor, Rhona Mitra plays Viktor's daughter and Michael Sheen portrays a werewolf. However, Kate Beckinsale is absent in the new movie.
