April 20, 2010 - New DVD and Video Releases:
'Crazy Heart' DVD
Jeff Bridges won a Best Actor Academy Award for his performance in this drama with music. Bad Blake (Bridges) is an alcoholic 57-year-old country singer-songwriter. Once a star, he now plays one-night stands with pickup bands. But he tries to turn his life around when he gets into a romantic relationship with a young single mom (Maggie Gyllenhaal). Colin Farrell portrays a singer who was once Blake's protégé, but has become much more popular than his former mentor. The soundtrack contains about 16 musical numbers, including the Oscar-winning Best Song "The Weary Kind."
'The Lovely Bones' DVD
Adapted from Alice Sebold's novel, this film co-written and directed by Peter Jackson tells basically the same story as the book, but with different emphasis. In 1973 Susie (Saoirse Ronan) is a 14-year-old girl who is murdered, but in the afterlife she watches as life goes on in the suburban community she left behind. She observes her father and mother (Mark Wahlberg and Rachel Weisz), as well as her alcoholic grandmother (Susan Sarandon). She also watches her killer (an almost unrecognizable Stanley Tucci) and the investigating policeman (Michael Imperioli).
'The Young Victoria' DVD
Queen Victoria was in her teens when she was crowned in 1837, and she ruled for over six decades. In this British historical drama, Emily Blunt plays the queen around the time of her coronation and into the first few years of her reign. Much of the film is about the love story between Victoria and her consort, Prince Albert (Rupert Friend), but it's also concerned with the politics of the day. The queen's mother is portrayed by Miranda Richardson, Jim Broadbent plays King William, Thomas Kretschmann takes the role of King Leopold of Belgium, and Paul Bettany plays Victoria's prime minister.
'Avatar' DVD
James Cameron's box-office record-breaking blockbuster is visually spectacular. However, it's heavy-handed and derivative on story, feeling a little like Pocahontas mixed with Dances With Wolves. In Avatar, a greedy and perfidious corporation with a private military force wants to continue mining on the moon Pandora and is willing do whatever it takes to the Na'vi, Pandora's indigenous population. By being enabled to fight through his dead brother's avatar, Jake Sully, a wheelchair-bound paraplegic veteran, is given a second chance to be a soldier. But along the way, Jake falls in love with a beautiful Na'vi woman and begins to see things differently.
