Christina Aguilera first hit national pop charts in her late teens in 1999. Since then her career has ranged across teen pop, powerful adult-oriented ballads, and music that looked back to jazz and swing for inspiration.

"Beautiful" was written by Linda Perry, and she originally wanted to record it for herself. Pink also was interested in the song, but ultimately Christina Aguilera won out and recorded "Beautiful" for her Stripped album. It tells of someone fighting for self esteem, and the accompanying music video received strong acclaim for its sensitive portrayal of lgbt individuals. "Beautiful" was nominated for a Grammy Award for Song of the Year and Christina Aguilera won the award for Best Female Pop Vocal.
