The Best New Movies on DVD and Blu-ray for January 2009

By , About.com Guide

Let's take a look at the best movies on DVD and Blu-ray disc for January 2009.

'Breakfast at Tiffany's' (1961) DVD - Centennial Collection

When struggling writer and gigolo Paul Varjak (George Peppard) moves into a Manhattan apartment, he befriends an irrepressible neighbor, Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn), a woman who lives off her good looks and charming ways. As Paul learns more about Holly, the friendship between the two hustlers turns romantic, underscored by Henry Mancini’s music (notably the song "Moon River"). Audrey Hepburn is at her most charismatic here, and her Holly Golightly is a character I’ll never forget.

'Pineapple Express' DVD

Seth Rogen and James Franco star as buddies in this stoner comedy from the Judd Apatow laugh factory. Dale (Rogen) is a process server whose drug dealer Saul (Franco) sells him a fabulous kind of marijuana called Pineapple Express. When Dale goes to serve a summons, he witnesses a murder by a drug lord (Gary Cole) and a corrupt cop (Rosie Perez). Dale flees, but leaves behind a roach, which the killers quickly realize must have come from Saul. That's when Dale and Saul go on the lam with some incompetent hit men in pursuit. It all ends up in a gangland war.

'Vicky Cristina Barcelona'

Written and directed by Woody Allen, this comedy stars Javier Bardem, Penélope Cruz, Scarlett Johansson and Rebecca Hall. Vicky (Hall) and Cristina (Johansson) are young American women who visit Barcelona for several weeks. One of the film's charms is the location shooting in and around the Spanish city, which features famous Gaudí architecture. Both women end up in sexual relationships with Juan Antonio (Bardem), a celebrated painter they meet on their trip. But things get even more complicated when his sexy, violent ex-wife (Cruz) comes back into his life.

'Zodiac' Blu-ray Disc - Director's Cut

Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr., this docudrama tells the story of still officially unsolved northern California serial killings. The film chronicles the murders that occurred around 1969 and the investigations that took place over the next two decades or so. Key investigators include a police detective (Ruffalo), a newspaper reporter (Downey) and cartoonist-turned-author Robert Graysmith (Gyllenhaal). The movie is based on Graysmith's true crime books Zodiac and Zodiac Unmasked.
