There are some interesting video/DVD releases slated for next week, including The Libertine, The Matador, and Stoned. Let's take a look at these movies on DVD and video, along with some additional releases of interest.

The Libertine DVD

Length: 130 minutes
MPAA Rating: R for strong sexuality including dialogue, violence and language

Johnny Depp stars in this biopic, adapted from the Stephen Jeffreys' stage play. Depp portrays English poet and courtier John Wilmot (1647-1680), the second Earl of Rochester. The story is set in London during the reign of King Charles II (John Malkovich). Wilmot writes satiric and bawdy poetry, and he deals with his wife (Rosamund Pike), a prostitute (Kelly Reilly) and an actress (Samantha Morton). But the earl is an unlikable character, and the film is primarily a chronicle of his downward spiral into debauchery.

The Matador DVD

Pierce Brosnan and Greg Kinnear star in this movie about the friendship between a professional hit man and a down-on-his-luck businessman. Julian Noble (Brosnan) is an aging hit man who gets blue when he realizes he has no friends and no home. In a Mexico City hotel bar, he meets Danny Wright (Kinnear), who's there trying to put together some kind of business deal. Later, Julian shows up at the Wright home in Denver and moves in with Danny and his wife, who can't help being fascinated by their strange guest.

Stoned DVD

Tagline: "The wild and wicked world of Brian Jones."

Length: 102 minutes
MPAA Rating: R for drug use, sexuality, nudity and language (An unrated version of this movie is also available on DVD.)

This is a docudrama about the final days of Brian Jones (Leo Gregory), a founding member of the Rolling Stones. In the 1960s, he played guitar and harmonica and sang along with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. However, Jones' heavy drug use interfered with his ability to perform, and he was kicked out of the band. In this movie he hires an assistant named Frank Thorogood (Paddy Considine) and becomes drug buddies with him. But in 1969 Jones turns up drowned in his own swimming pool, dead at age 27.
