New Video and DVD Releases

The new DVD releases include Alpha Dog, Dreamgirls and Little Children. In addition, we'll take a sneak peek at next week's movies on video/DVD.

Alpha Dog DVD

Tagline: "Inspired by true events."

Length: 117 minutes
MPAA Rating: R for pervasive drug use and language, strong violence, sexuality and nudity

Nick Cassavetes wrote and directed this crime drama based on the real-life case of Jesse James Hollywood, fictionalized here as Johnny Truelove (Emile Hirsch). Johnny is a drug dealer, and when one of his customers runs up a big tab, he and his pals take hostage the customer's 15-year-old brother. But the hostage enjoys his life with his captors, particularly Frankie (Justin Timberlake). However, as Johnny and his drug crew come to realize they will be charged with kidnapping, they take an appalling course of action.

Dreamgirls DVD

Tagline: "All you have to do is dream."

Length: 131 minutes
MPAA Rating: PG-13 for language, some sexuality and drug content

Beyoncé Knowles, Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy star in this adaptation of the 1980s Broadway musical. The story is set in the 1960s and is based loosely on the Supremes. A struggling trio (Knowles, Jennifer Hudson, Anika Noni Rose) meets a music producer (Foxx) who gets them a job backing up an established singer (Murphy). The trio eventually achieves stardom, but there are personal and professional problems along the way. The showstopper song is Hudson's "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going."

Little Children DVD

Length: 130 minutes
MPAA Rating: R for strong sexuality and nudity, language and some disturbing content

Kate Winslet and Jackie Earle Haley give Oscar-nominated performances in this drama that was adapted from Tom Perrotta's novel. Set in American suburbia, the movie was directed by Todd Field (In the Bedroom). Winslet plays a woman who went to grad school and is now uneasy in her role of wife and mom. She gets into an affair with a hunky married guy (Patrick Wilson), a stay-at-home dad who's failed the bar exam twice. Meanwhile, a pedophile (Haley) is released from prison and comes back into the community.
