L'Amour fou DVD

This French-language documentary centers on the 2009 auction of the art collection of Yves Saint Laurent a few months after the fashion designer's death. There were 733 items, including works by Picasso, Matisse, Mondrian and Cezanne, and the auction proceeds exceeded $480 million. The main person appearing in the documentary is Pierre Bergé, who was Saint Laurent's partner in both business and life for 50 years. Shown are the residences where the couple lived in Paris, the French countryside and Marrakech. There's also a little about Saint Laurent's battles with drugs, alcohol and depression.

This is a five-and-a-half-hour dramatization of the life and times of the international terrorist dubbed Carlos the Jackal by the press. The director was Olivier Assayas, and the title character is portrayed by Édgar Ramírez. The story, which begins in the 1970s and spans more than 20 years, takes place in Europe, South America and the Middle East. There is dialogue in several languages. Carlos organized and carried out a long series of assassinations and bombings, but many were botched. In his best-known operation, he led a group of terrorists in taking hostages at a 1975 OPEC meeting in Vienna.

The Phantom Carriage (1920) Criterion Collection DVD

A classic 1921 silent film being released on DVD and Blu-ray by Criterion Collection, this is a supernatural tale directed by and starring Victor Sjöström (best known as the lead in Ingmar Bergman's Wild Strawberries). Based on a novel by Selma Lagerlöf, the story, which unreels using flashbacks within flashbacks, is about an alcoholic (Sjöström) who is killed on New Year's Eve and consigned to drive Death's chariot for a year. The movie had groundbreaking visual effects, achieved mostly via double exposures and match cuts. Two musical scores are provided, one by experimental duo KLT.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon DVD

MPAA Rating: PG-13 for intense prolonged sequences of sci-fi action violence, mayhem and destruction, and for language, some sexuality and innuendo
This actioner is the follow-up to Transformers (2007) and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009). Michael Bay is back as director, and actors Shia LaBeouf, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson and John Turturro reprise their roles, but Megan Fox is replaced by Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. The franchise is based on Hasbro toys that change back and forth between a humanoid action figure and something like a car, truck or airplane. As in the first two films, Dark of the Moon is about humans and good Transformers called Autobots fighting colossal battles against evil Transformers known as Decepticons.
