Cave of Forgotten Dreams Blu-ray Disc

Length: 90 minutes
MPAA Rating: G

Werner Herzog (Encounters at the End of the World, Grizzly Man) wrote, directed and narrates this documentary about the world's oldest paintings. These are Ice Age paintings of horses, cattle, reindeer, lions, panthers, bears, owls, rhinos and hyenas on the walls of the Chauvet-Pont-d'Arc Cave in southern France, which were discovered in 1994. There are paintings here that are quite possibly 32,000 years old, though there's some dispute. But the Chauvet Cave paintings are believed to be older than those in the better-known caves of Lascaux and Altamira. In his narration, Herzog contemplates the paintings' significance.

The short — three apples high — blue creatures called "The Smurfs" in English were created by Belgian cartoonist Peyo and in 1958 were introduced in French-language comic strips as "Les Schtroumphs." But the creatures are best known to Americans from the Hanna-Barbera cartoons that ran on Saturday mornings on NBC in the 1980s. Now comes this live-action/animated hybrid movie, in which half a dozen Smurfs are transported to Manhattan, where they have adventures. Neil Patrick Harris plays a marketing exec who helps the Smurfs. Jonathan Winters, Katy Perry and others supply Smurf voices.
