Ewan McGregor and Christopher Plummer star in this indie seriocomedy written and directed by filmmaker, artist and graphic designer Mike Mills. Oliver (McGregor) had always believed his father, Hal (Plummer), was straight. But Oliver is startled when, at age 75, Hal declares he's gay and soon takes a young lover (Goran Visnjic). However, Hal has lung cancer and is only able to enjoy his new lifestyle for five years. But Oliver meets an attractive French actress (Mélanie Laurent from Inglourious Basterds) and gets into a romantic relationship with her. The story is about taking risks in love.

Length: 106 minutes
MPAA Rating: R for disturbing violence, some strong sexuality, nudity, pervasive language and some drug use
This quirky drama — an offbeat romance with unsettling violence — got lots of buzz at Sundance. It marks the debut of talented writer-director Evan Glodell, who also plays Woodrow, the main character. Woodrow meets Milly, a free-spirited, sexy young woman, when they compete against each other in a cricket-eating contest. He falls hard for her, leading to horrible consequences. But his best friend Aidan builds for him a souped-up muscle car with flamethrowers, and Woodrow gets a good-looking replacement girlfriend. Newcomer Glodell has made a high-energy film that is quite visually arresting.

Larry Crowne DVD
Length: 98 minutes
MPAA Rating: PG-13 for brief strong language and some sexual content
Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts are paired in this tame, lightweight romantic comedy. Hanks not only plays the title character, he also directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding). Larry Crowne is a divorced man who gets fired from his job as a manager at a big-box discount department store. He enrolls in a community college, where his speech teacher is Mercedes (Roberts), a woman unhappily married to a porn-addicted deadbeat, and Larry gets into a romantic relationship with her. Another of Larry's teachers is played by George Takei.
