Hugo DVD

Martin Scorsese directed this drama, adapted from Brian Selznick's 2007 illustrated children's novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret. The principal roles in the movie are played by two child actors — Asa Butterfield (The Boy in the Striped Pajamas) and Chloë Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass) — and Ben Kingsley. Set in 1931, the story centers on Hugo (Butterfield), a 12-year-old who tends the clocks in a Paris train station. He meets shopkeeper Georges Méliès (Kingsley), a motion picture pioneer who has fallen into obscurity. Hugo befriends a girl (Moretz), and he is often chased by the station inspector (Sacha Baron Cohen).

Johnny English Reborn DVD

Rowan Atkinson reprises his role as the title character in this James Bond spoof, a follow-up to Johnny English (2003). The 2011 film opens with bumbling spy Johnny English in a Tibetan monastery, exiled there due to a fiasco in Mozambique. But he's recalled to MI7's London headquarters, where his new boss Pegasus (Gillian Anderson) assigns him the mission of preventing the assassination of the Chinese premier. English has sessions with MI7's behavioral psychologist (Rosamund Pike), and he tangles with an elderly Asian assassin (Pik-Sen Lim). The mission takes English to Hong Kong and the Alps.

Scarlet Street (1945) Kino Classics Blu-ray Disc

A classic Hollywood film noir, this 1945 movie stars Edward G. Robinson and was directed by Fritz Lang. Chris Cross (Robinson) is a meek, middle-aged, middle-class man with an office job. He happens to meet an alluring woman named Kitty (Joan Bennett), who turns out to be a femme fatale. Kitty comes to believe Cross is a wealthy professional artist, though actually he only paints pictures as a hobby. Her con-man boyfriend (Dan Duryea) gets Kitty involved in a scheme to extort money from Cross, who begins to steal from his employer. Soon everything spins out of control, leading to a brutal murder.

Vanya on 42nd Street (1994) The Criterion Collection DVD

Louis Malle directed this 1994 film that captures a performance of Anton Chekhov's stage drama Uncle Vanya, which premiered in Moscow in 1899. The movie was shot at the abandoned, crumbling New Amsterdam Theater on Manhattan's 42nd Street. The film is based on an adaptation by David Mamet, and the cast includes Julianne Moore and Wallace Shawn. Joshua Redman supplied an incidental jazz score. The story involves Vanya (Shawn), the manager of a country estate, who becomes enamored of Yelena (Moore), the estate owner's wife. When the owner plans to sell, Vanya tries to kill him.
