Paranormal Activity 3 DVD
Length: 83 minutes
MPAA Rating: R for some violence, language, brief sexuality and drug use
The follow-up to Paranormal Activity (2007) and Paranormal Activity 2 (2010), this horror movie is a prequel. It starts out with brief scenes that take place in 2005-2006 and show sisters Katie and Kristi as adults played by Katie Featherston and Sprague Grayden as in the earlier films. But then the story goes back to 1988 when Katie and Kristi were little girls, and they are played by child actresses. The girls live in a California suburban house with their mom and her boyfriend, a wedding videographer. Creepy things begin happening, and the boyfriend sets up cameras and records everything on videotape.

The Rum Diary DVD
Length: 120 minutes
MPAA Rating: R for language, brief drug use and sexuality
Johnny Depp stars in this character study based on a heavily autobiographical novel by Hunter Thompson. Depp previously starred in the 1998 screen adaptation of Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and The Rum Diary is more or less a prequel to that earlier film. Thompson's alter ego here is Paul Kemp (Depp), who circa 1960 relocates to Puerto Rico and takes a job as a journalist for a daily newspaper in San Juan. There Kemp drinks rum, has adventures and begins to find his voice as a fiction writer. Supporting actors in the movie include Aaron Eckhart, Michael Rispoli, Amber Heard and Richard Jenkins.

Take Shelter DVD
Length: 120 minutes
MPAA Rating: R for some language
Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road, TV's Boardwalk Empire) gives a powerful performance in this critically acclaimed psychological thriller, and starring alongside him is Jessica Chastain. Construction worker Curtis LaForche (Shannon), his loving wife (Chastain) and their deaf young daughter live in a pleasant, modest house in a tornado-prone part of Ohio. But Curtis begins having disturbing apocalyptic visions, and driven by the need to protect his family, he builds an elaborate storm shelter in his yard. He may be losing his mind, and the film does a superb job of creating an atmosphere of dread.
