Netflix has announced a partnership with LG Electronics to develop a system that would make it possible for a subscriber to choose a movie from among thousands of titles and begin watching it almost immediately on their television screen. The plan is that this service will become available sometime in the second half of 2008. The system will involve a set-top box that allows movies and television shows to be streamed via the Internet to HDTVs. Competitors to the Netflix-LG system include Vudu and Amazon Unbox on TiVo. Systems that support streaming movies from large libraries straight to TV screens are still in their infancy, but within a few years this way of watching movies is expected to be very popular.
