Amazon.com has launched a service it is calling Video on Demand that allows users to rent or purchase movies and TV shows and watch them immediately. The new service permits a user to choose from among 40,000 titles and stream the content to a PC or Mac or a Sony Bravia TV.

Wal-Mart is getting out of the online DVD rental business on June 16, 2005, although their current subscribers are being offered some fairly good alternatives.

Blockbuster has entered into a legal agreement with 47 states to settle allegations its so-called No Late Fees program has been handled in a misleading manner. One consequence is that some Blockbuster customers are supposed to be eligible for refunds or credits under some conditions.

An index of installments in the Netflix diary.

For me, it's easy to find most DVD titles quickly just by driving to a nearby store. Also, I have more choices available to me than the average person because I sometimes receive screeners. But despite all the options available to me in finding DVDs, a combination of curiosity and the luxurious selection of titles on their Web site finally got the better of me, and I decided to give Netflix a try.

I'm giving the Netflix DVD rental service a try, and this is the second installment in a diary I’m keeping of my experiences with them. I'm hoping the information in the diary will be helpful to others.
