Molly Shannon stars in this unconventional comedy that was written and directed by Mike White. Although this marks White's directorial debut, his previous screenwriting credits include Nacho Libre, The School of Rock and The Good Girl. The protagonist in Year of the Dog is Peggy (Shannon), an office assistant who is awkward with people and obsesses over her pet beagle, Pencil. When Pencil dies, Peggy is thrown into emotional chaos. She tries to relate to a couple of unsuitable men (John C. Reilly, Peter Sarsgaard) and goes bonkers as an animal-rights activist.
