Flight 93 National Memorial Visitors Guide

The Flight 93 National Memorial, administered by the National Park Service, serves as a permanent memorial to the 40 heroes on United Flight 93 who courageously gave their lives thwarting a planned attack on the nation's capital on September 11, 2001. The Flight 93 National Memorial protects the crash site of hijacked United Airlines Flight 93, in a rural field just outside of Shanksville, Pennsylvania. 

The Flight 93 National Memorial design by Paul Murdoch Architects of Los Angeles was selected in 2005, following a year-long, international design competition, making the memorial the first national park designed entirely through an open, public competition. The family members of Flight 93 played a major role in the selection of the final design.

The focus of the Flight 93 National Memorial is to represent the 'Sacred Ground,' and the final resting place of Flight 93's passengers and crew. Visitors entering the Flight 93 National Memorial first view this area from above before stopping at the indoor Visitors Center. Next, visitors can descend down the curving mile-long walkway to the Sacred Ground area. Forty memorial groves of both red maple and sugar maple trees line the path to add beauty and serenity to the resting grounds. The plaza within the Sacred Ground also allows visitors to closely view the crash site and pay their respects to the fallen heroes.

Operating Hours

The Flight 93 National Memorial Visitor Center is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. including holidays except for New Year's Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day when the center remains closed.

The grounds are open daily from sunrise to sunset, year round, and including all holidays. However, please be aware that adverse weather conditions may result in unexpected closures, so be sure to check the National Park Service website before visiting.

Admission & Fees

The Flight 93 National Memorial, under the administration of the National Park Service, is open to the public and charges no admission fee.

Location and Directions

The Flight 93 National Memorial is located on 6281 Lincoln Highway in Stoystown, PA. Stoystown is located in Stonycreek Township which is a part of Somerset County, and in the southwestern area of Pennsylvania, about 65 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. The closest exit off the Pennsylvania Turnpike is Exit 110, located about 15 miles southwest of the Flight 93 memorial.
