This action-adventure movie gives a big-screen version of the origin of the Marvel Comics hero Spider-Man. Nerdy high school senior Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) visits a university, where he is bitten by a genetically altered spider. Soon Peter is more muscular, can make huge leaps, and spin webs. When a member of his family is killed during the commission of a crime, he becomes Spider-Man, a heroic crime-fighter. In this movie, Spider-Man takes on the Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), a superhuman homicidal maniac. Although they use different methods, both Spider-Man and the Green Goblin are able to soar through the Manhattan skies. Meanwhile, Peter makes a tentative beginning at romance with attractive next-door neighbor Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst).
