Based on the nonfiction book by H.G. Bissinger, this sports drama is set in 1988 Odessa, Texas, where the inhabitants eat, sleep, and breathe high school football. The main character is Coach Gaines (Billy Bob Thornton), who knows he and his family will be moving on if he doesn't guide the team to gridiron glory. The movie follows the team's vicissitudes as it marches toward the state championship. But the film's strength is its strong sense of place.
