Profile: "The Incredibles" DVD

By Ivana Redwine, About.com

Winner of the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, "The Incredibles" (2004) is a slam-bang action-adventure family movie that contains lots of humor, and Buena Vista Home Entertainment has released it on DVD as a 2-disc Collector's Edition loaded with extras.

Actually, "The Incredibles" is available on DVD as two separate products, one with the feature film in widescreen, the other with the movie in full-screen. However, the bonus materials and special features of the two products are identical.

"The Incredibles" was nominated for a total of four Oscars and won two, including Best Sound Editing. Interestingly enough, the film was one of the nominees for Best Original Screenplay.

The story is about a family of superheros consisting of Mr. Incredible (voice of Craig T. Nelson), his wife Elastigirl (voice of Holly Hunter), and their three kids, all of whom have special powers. As a result of lawsuits, the Incredibles end up being relocated by the government and given new identities. Mr. Incredible becomes Bob Parr, an insurance company employee dealing with claims. Bob, his wife (now known as Helen Parr), and their kids live in suburbia and try not to stand out in any way. But when a crisis arises, they come out from undercover and have lots of adventures while battling malevolent forces.

"The Incredibles" uses computer-generated animation and is more or less in the school of "Toy Story," "Monsters, Inc." and "Finding Nemo." The movie combines amazing visuals, fast-paced action, and comic episodes.

"The Incredibles" DVD bonus materials include two animated shorts: "Jack-Jack Attack," created specifically for the DVD, and the Oscar-nominated "Boundin'," which was shown theatrically along with the feature film.

Other DVD extras include a 15-minute alternate opening and five deleted scenes. There's also a 27-minute making-of documentary, plus 41 minutes of additional behind-the-scenes material broken out into 10 segments.

The feature film can be watched while listening to two separate audio commentary tracks, one by writer-director Brad Bird and producer John Walker, the other by several of the animators.

As a joke, the DVD set includes an animated short titled "The Adventures of Mr. Incredible" made to look like an old-fashioned cartoon. It is facetiously claimed to have long been believed lost and only recently discovered.
