Prolific, eclectic, maverick film director Robert Altman died on November 20, 2006, at age 81. He was nominated five times for the Academy Award for Best Director, and his best-known movies include M*A*S*H (1970), Nashville (1975) and The Player (1992). More recently, he directed Gosford Park (2001) and The Prairie Home Companion (2006). Other memorable Altman films include Short Cuts (1993), The Long Goodbye (1973) and McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971).
