Guide Review - Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid DVDButch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is a film that lives up to its tagline: "Just for the fun of it!" Years had passed since I had seen this film, and I had forgotten how delightful this movie was. And the best part of watching Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid again on DVD was being reminded of just how much fun a movie can be. This superb buddy movie has title characters that are loosely based on historical figures, Western outlaws from the turn of the last century. Butch (Paul Newman) and Sundance (Robert Redford) are two lifelong friends and partners in crime. Newman and Redford are terrific as the wisecracking duo. They have the kind of star power and chemistry together on screen that's rarely matched in the movies. The quips they trade sparkle with wit, but that's no accident. The sharp dialogue in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is due to the excellent script by William Goldman. Also, part of the reason this film has worn so well over the years is because of George Roy Hill's skillful direction. The DVD set has a variety of bonus materials. Some of the featurettes have material that overlaps and becomes repetitive, but overall the special features enhanced my understanding of the film, its stars, and the level of craft involved in making the movie. I highly recommend Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid on DVD. |
