There are three different versions of "The Phantom of the Opera" on DVD, and the one I am reviewing here is the single-disc widescreen one, which has outstanding picture and sound quality.

There's also a single-disc full-screen DVD version of "Phantom," which is identical to the one described here, except the aspect ratio is 1.33:1.

But if you're really into "The Phantom of the Opera," you'll probably want to get the two-disc Special Edition DVD. I have not personally checked out the Special Edition, but my research leads me to understand that one of the discs is identical to the single-disc widescreen version reviewed here, and the other disc contains bonus materials, including a pair of making-of documentaries, a deleted scene, and an Easter egg.

However, let me emphasize that my only first-hand knowledge of "The Phantom of the Opera" on DVD is from the single-disc widescreen version.

DVD Details for the Single-Disc Widescreen Version:

  • DVD Release Date: May 3, 2005
  • Feature Run Time: 2 Hours 21 Minutes
  • Anamorphic Widescreen (2.35:1), Color
  • MPAA Rating: PG-13 for Brief Violent Images
  • English 5.1 Dolby Digital
  • French 5.1 Dolby Digital
  • English Subtitles
  • French Subtitles
  • Spanish Subtitles
  • Theatrical Trailer
