Three Good Featurettes and a So-So Making-Of
The bonus materials on the Brokeback Mountain DVD are on the skimpy side, with a total running time of only about 45 minutes. My favorite extra is the 11-minute "From Script to Screen: Interviews With Larry McMurtry & Diana Ossana," which is about transforming the magazine story into the movie. Another fairly good featurette is the seven-minute "Directing From the Heart: Ang Lee," in which we are told about how Lee gets emotion into the films he directs. Also not bad is the six-minute "On Being a Cowboy," about how Ledger, Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway go to cowboy camp to prepare for their roles in the movie. Finally, there's the run-of-the-mill 21-minute "Sharing the Story: The Making of Brokeback Mountain," which was made for Logo TV. By the way, it becomes clear in these DVD extras that the location shooting for the film was done mostly in Alberta, Canada.
