Making-Of Documentary

The Marie Antoinette DVD provides a 26-minute making-of documentary that is worth watching. Antonia Fraser is in it, and she says about the movie made from her book, "I adore the look of it." She also says, "I thought Kirsten Dunst was wonderful."

Writer-director Sofia Coppola talks about her film, and we get to see her direct a few scenes, including the one where Marie Antoinette says, "Let them eat cake." Superimposed on the screen are the words "Shooting fantasy 'Wicked Queen' sequence."

Jason Schwartzman and Kirsten Dunst tell how the costumes made it easier for them to get into character. Dunst says, "It does help to have the corsets because then it felt like she [Marie Antoinette] was a little bird trying to get out of all those restrictions."

In addition, the costume/hair/make-up expert, the production designer and the cinematographer discuss briefly some of the technical aspects.

Deleted Scenes and Cribs With Louis XVI

The DVD contains two short deleted scenes accompanied by text statements from Sofia Coppola. One is at a performance of a Gluck opera, which Coppola deleted because "it felt like one opera too many." The other shows Marie Antoinette feeling blue after she leaves her Swedish lover, but Coppola deleted it because it made the protagonist seem too self-pitying.

Also on the DVD is the four-minute "Cribs With Louis XVI," which aired on MTV. This is footage of Jason Schwartzman dressed as Louis XVI and giving the audience a goofy tour inside the Château de Versailles.
