By Ivana Redwine, About.com

Here's a selection of new movies on DVD for September 2008.

September 2, 2008

Married Life DVD
This offbeat combination of period melodrama, film noir and dark comedy features a fine cast that includes Chris Cooper, Pierce Brosnan, Patricia Clarkson and Rachel McAdams. It's 1949, and Harry and Pat Allen (Cooper and Clarkson) seem to others to enjoy a comfortable marriage. But Harry falls in love with a young widow named Kay (McAdams), and he tells his pal Richard (Brosnan) that since Pat would be devastated by divorce, he plans to murder her. Then Richard gets the hots for the bottle-blonde Kay, and soon Pat introduces some complications of her own.

Then She Found Me DVD
Helen Hunt stars in this seriocomedy, in which she also makes her directorial debut. Hunt plays April Epner, a 39-year-old New York City kindergarten teacher who must deal with major changes in her life. Her husband (Matthew Broderick) leaves her, but she is carrying his baby. Her adoptive mother passes away, but her biological mother (Bette Midler), a local talk show host, comes into her life out of nowhere. April also meets the recently divorced father (Colin Firth) of one of her students. In an unexpected bit of casting, April's obstetrician is played by author Salman Rushdie.

Baby Mama DVD
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler star in this comedy written and directed by Michael McCullers, and all three of these people have Saturday Night Live backgrounds. Kate (Fey) is an unmarried 37-year-old executive who desperately wants a baby and goes to a surrogacy agency run by a woman played by Sigourney Weaver. Angie (Poehler), a lower-class type, ends up carrying the child. The story involves Angie splitting from her common-law husband and moving in with Kate, forming an odd couple. Steve Martin portrays Kate's boss, and Greg Kinnear plays her love interest.

The Fall DVD
Shot over a period of four years in about 18 countries by Tarsem, a longtime director of music videos and commercials, this inventive fantasy presents a stunning series of visual images, although there's little narrative drive. The film is structured around a girl named Alexandria (Catinca Untaru), who is hospitalized with a broken arm in 1915 Los Angeles. She befriends a despondent, paralyzed stuntman named Roy (Lee Pace), who wants to commit suicide. Roy tells Alexandria a tall tale, and the movie goes inside her mind as she imagines how everything looks.

The Forbidden Kingdom DVD
Jet Li and Jackie Chan appear together for the first time in this martial-arts movie, but the hero is played by Michael Angarano. Jason (Angarano) is a modern-day Boston teenager who gets transported to a mythical version of feudal China. There the hard-drinking Lu Yan (Chan) and the Silent Monk (Li) first battle each other, then team up and join forces with Jason and a good-looking young female warrior called Golden Sparrow. Their objective is to deliver a magical staff to the Monkey King (Li again), but an evil warlord and a wicked witch are out to stop them.
