Here's a selection of new movies on DVD for July 2008.

July 1, 2008

Drillbit Taylor DVD
Owen Wilson stars in this comedy from the Judd Apatow laugh factory. The story is about three nerdy boys — one overweight, another gawky and bespectacled, the third tiny. From their first day as high school freshmen, they are terrorized by a psychopathic, bullying senior. The trio decides to hire a bodyguard, but the only candidate they can afford is Drillbit Taylor (Wilson), a homeless man who claims to have been an Army Ranger. Drillbit manages to pose as a substitute teacher at the school, where he tries to romance an attractive faculty member (Leslie Mann).

Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns DVD
Angela Bassett stars in this comedy-drama, which was written and directed by Tyler Perry, who appears on screen briefly as Madea. Bassett portrays Brenda, a single mom struggling to raise her three children in Chicago. She had never met her father, but when he dies, Brenda and her kids travel to rural Georgia to attend his funeral. There she meets the Brown family, an eccentric clan related to her through her father. Also, a coach (Rick Fox, formerly of the Los Angeles Lakers) takes an interest in both Brenda and her son, who is a promising basketball player.

Vantage Point DVD
The cast of this action thriller includes Dennis Quaid, Matthew Fox, Forest Whitaker, Sigourney Weaver and William Hurt. The movie involves world leaders meeting for an anti-terrorism summit in Salamanca, Spain. There United States President Ashton (Hurt) is shot, resulting in mass confusion and a violent aftermath. The central events are replayed as seen through the eyes of different observers, and additional information is revealed each time. Quaid and Fox play Secret Service agents, Weaver portrays a TV news producer and Whitaker plays a tourist.

The Ruins DVD
This horror movie is based on the novel by Scott Smith. Four good-looking young American adults — two gal pals (Jena Malone and Laura Ramsey) and their boyfriends (Jonathan Tucker and Shawn Ashmore) — go for a holiday in Mexico. At their hotel they meet a handsome German (Joe Anderson) and accompany him to some ancient Mayan ruins out in the jungle. There they encounter unfriendly indigenous people and end up trapped at a big stone temple covered with flesh-eating vines. The tourists soon must make decisions about performing surgical procedures.

Stop-Loss DVD
Ryan Phillippe and Abbie Cornish star in this drama about American soldiers and the Iraq War. Staff Sgt. Brandon King (Phillippe) is the leader of a squad that gets into a horrendous battle in Tikrit. Soon afterward, he and his pal Steve (Channing Tatum) return home to Brazos, Texas. Although King's enlistment contract is up, the military orders him back to Iraq under its stop-loss policy. Fed up, King goes AWOL and sets out on a road trip to Washington, D.C., and Steve's fiancée (Cornish) travels with him. A series of dramatic incidents occur on the cross-country journey.

Superhero Movie DVD
This is a parody of superhero films, particularly Spider-Man, but there are also references to Batman, X-Men and Fantastic Four. The central character is Rick Riker (Nickelodeon's Drake Bell), a weakling who gets bitten by a genetically altered insect while on a school field trip. Soon he can climb walls and move about with incredible agility, and he dons a costume to become Dragonfly, who comes to the aid of the people of Empire City. There's a pretty girl (Sara Paxton) to win and a dastardly villain to fight. The cast includes Leslie Nielsen and a Tom Cruise impersonator.
