Informative Documentary on Ken Loach

Although Ken Loach has directed about 25 theatrical films over a span of four decades, he is not well known to the general public. The DVD supplies quite a bit of information about him in the 49-minute documentary "Carry On Ken: A Look at the Work of Director Ken Loach." This was made in 2006, so you see and hear Loach at about age 70. The documentary has a little about his early career when he received some attention for his BBC television drama "Cathy Come Home" (1966) and his theatrical film Kes (1969).

However, the emphasis is on Loach's later efforts, and there are clips from about 10 of his movies, including Land and Freedom (1995), My Name Is Joe (1998) and Bread and Roses (2000). Several actors, including Brian Cox and Robert Carlysle, talk about their experiences in working with the director.

Loach is noted for his film treatments of social issues, and in the documentary British film critic and historian Derek Malcolm states that Loach "is a socialist and proud of it."
