Documentary Where Actors Meet Those Who Lost Loved Ones
The DVD contains a one-hour documentary titled "United 93: The Families and the Film" that is very moving. In it we see family members of about 10 of the people who perished on United 93. Since the flight was from New Jersey to California, those are the states where most of the people involved live. What makes this documentary so touching is that in half a dozen cases the actor who portrays a person aboard the flight meets one or more members of that person's family. Each family has its own way of grieving, and it's impossible not to admire their resilience.
Documentary About Air Traffic Control and the Military
On Disc Two of the United 93 Special Edition two-disc set, there is a 48-minute documentary titled "Chasing Planes Witnesses to 9/11." In it, thoughtful civilian and military operations personnel who participated in 9/11 reflect on that infamous day. It immediately becomes clear that communications were inadequate, aggravating an inherently confusing situation. Ben Sliney says that at times as many as a dozen planes were suspected of having been hijacked. Also, there were shockingly few military resources in place: Colonel Robert Marr states there were only four jet fighters available to protect the entire northeastern United States. At one point, a lumbering C-130 cargo plane was dispatched to defend Washington, D.C. However, it's important to understand that the spirit of the documentary is to try to correct shortcomings and improve responses to terrorism.
