More on the DVD Extras
No hard evidence has ever been found to prove that Sweeney Todd existed in real life, but there is a tradition that he lived from 1756 to 1802. The 16-minute "Sweeney's London" gives an idea of what the city would have been like during that period, particularly around 186 Fleet Street, the address where legend has located Todd's barbershop.
The nine-minute "A Bloody Business" is a fascinating featurette showing how the special effects were achieved when Todd slashes throats. The actors portraying victims have a flesh-colored appliance glued to their neck and pumps are used to cause fake blood to spurt out. Dummies that look like the actors are then ejected from the barber's chair and dumped down the chute.
The DVD set provides three run-of-the-mill featurettes that together fulfill the usual functionality of a making-of. These are the 26-minute "Burton + Depp + Carter = Todd," the 24-minute "The Making of Sweeney Todd" and the nine-minute "Designs for a Demon Barber." There is some overlap here, but you get to hear from key members of the cast and crew, as well as learn a few interesting things about the process of making the movie.
Also, the DVD set contains a pair of Q & A sessions. One is the 20-minute "Sweeney Todd Press Conference, November 2007," where Burton, Depp, Bonham Carter, Rickman and two others respond to journalists' questions. The second Q & A is the 11-minute Web-based "Moviefone Unscripted With Tim Burton and Johnny Depp," where the director and lead actor answer questions submitted by Internet users.
