Downloading

By , About.com Guide

Definition: There are businesses that will sell or rent you a movie and via the Internet put a copy of it on a device in your home. You can watch the movie while the copy is in progress, although there will be a noticeable — perhaps even a lengthy — delay before you can begin watching. The process of copying the movie from their computer system to your device is called downloading. This method of buying or renting a movie is much more attractive to those people having a very fast Internet connection. A common form of movie downloading is to a computer's hard drive. The movie is then typically watched on a computer screen, or perhaps transferred to some sort of portable device for later viewing. However, movies can be downloaded not only to computers, but also to special-purpose devices, such as some video game consoles and some digital video recorders (DVRs). These and other special-purpose devices offer the possibility that a downloaded movie can be watched on a TV screen. In addition to the considerations already mentioned, you may not be satisfied with the selection of titles the various businesses make available for downloading. Although downloading is a way of getting movies to watch at home or on the go that some people find beneficial, it has many drawbacks and is not for everyone. Remember to always respect copyrights and the intellectual property of others. Illegally downloading movies has the potential of getting you into legal trouble.
