Thought-Provoking Thriller
Directed by Steven Spielberg, Munich (2005) is a bleak, noirish drama that was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Inspired by real events, the film is about a five-man squad sent out by Israel when 11 members of its 1972 Olympic team were murdered in the German city that gives the film its title. Led by Avner (Eric Bana), the squad is tasked by the Israeli government with tracking down and assassinating Palestinians in Europe.
Spielberg Speaks Out
Munich is a film where much of the interpretation is left to the viewer, and the movie has generated controversy. Now DVD gives Spielberg an opportunity to talk about his intentions in making the film, and he does so in a four-and-a-half-minute introduction to the movie.
Six Featurettes
Disc Two of the Munich Collector's Edition DVD set provides six featurettes with a total run time of an hour and a quarter. These contain information about how the film came to be made, actual events that occurred during the 1972 Munich kidnapping and massacre, production design and costuming, location shooting in Malta and Budapest, the actors from many countries that were cast in the movie's 155 speaking parts, and post-production. Below I've listed the titles and running times for the featurettes.
DVD Details
The DVD edition of Munich described here is the Two-Disc Collector's Edition. Disc One contains the feature film, and this disc's only extra is the four-and-a-half-minute intro by Spielberg. Disc Two contains the six featurettes discussed above.
In addition to the Two-Disc Collector's Edition of Munich, there are a pair of single-disc editions. One of these is identical with Disc One of the Two-Disc Collector's Edition, which has the feature film in widescreen. The other single-disc edition has the same content, except the movie is in full frame (1.33:1). Below I have given the details for the Two-Disc Collector's Edition of the Munich DVD.
