DVD News: July 19, 2006
It's been a long time coming, but at last there's a legal way to use the Internet to download some Hollywood studio movies and burn them to DVD. Titles from Buena Vista, Universal Studios, Sony Pictures and MGM are among the films that can be purchased this way from CinemaNow. At least for now, only movies that have been out on DVD for quite some time are available. Titles include Backdraft, Agent Cody Banks, Barbershop, I Spy, In Good Company, Prefontaine, Scent of a Woman and Resident Evil: Apocalypse. Price depends on the title, but the ones just listed go for around 10 or 15 dollars each. You can download an available movie, burn it to DVD, and watch that DVD by playing it in almost any standard DVD player. You get not only the feature film, but the menu and any special features that would normally be included on a store-bought disc containing that feature film. CinemaNow claims that typical download and burn times for one DVD are of the order of magnitude of three hours.
