A Brief Summary of the Movie

Ray Romano and Gene Hackman star in this comedy. Romano plays Handy Harrison, owner of the hardware store in sleepy Mooseport, Maine, where he's been dating Sally (Maura Tierney) for several years. But things get livelier in Mooseport when former U.S. President Monroe Cole (Hackman) takes up permanent residence there. He runs for mayor, and Sally goes out with him. This galvanizes Handy into opposing Cole in the mayoral race.

A Brief Review of the Movie and DVD Special Features

This isn’t a really bad movie, but I wished was less predictable and that the story didn’t move at such a leisurely pace. I was also disappointed this comedy was only occasionally laugh-out-loud funny. However, "Welcome to Mooseport" was mildly amusing throughout. To my mind, the best special feature on the DVD was the full-length audio commentary track by director Donald Petrie. The DVD also has deleted scenes, an outtake reel, and DVD Easter eggs. (I have yet to have a chance to look for the Easter eggs, but Petrie mentions them during the course of his commentary.)

This is a pleasant enough movie, but it’s very slight one, both in terms of artistic and entertainment quality. Even with the DVD special features thrown into the mix, I can only give this DVD a marginal recommendation and then only as a rental. Watching "Welcome to Mooseport" might be a good way to pass the time some evening when there’s nothing better to do, but it’s not the kind of movie that warrants repeated viewings.
