Hollywoodland DVD

Hollywoodland takes a fictionalized look at the death of real-life actor George Reeves, who became famous playing the title character in the popular TV series Adventures of Superman. Hollywoodland is entertaining when it depicts the world of George Reeves, but the movie loses energy by spending too much time in the world of a dull private eye. Read a review of Hollywoodland on DVD.

Review: "Hercules the Legendary Journeys - Season Two" DVD

This television series on DVD creates a mythic world that is not at all believable, and the stories have a simplicity that is almost cartoon-like. Yet the show’s tongue-in-cheek attitude and sense of good-natured fun is hard to resist.

Review: "Hiroshima mon amour" DVD

Alain Resnais's influential, innovative film is moving, compelling, and lyrical. I hadn't seen it in years, and after watching it on DVD recently, I was amazed at its resonance and complexity. Read a brief DVD review of "Hiroshima mon amour."

Review: "Husbands and Wives" DVD

"Husbands and Wives" is a witty, but edgy, look at romantic relationships. I got some very big laughs while watching this film. Read my brief review and DVD overview of "Husbands and Wives."

Review: "Ikiru" DVD

I see "Ikiru" as a thought-provoking meditation on what it means to live, and I believe that is what makes it resonate so strongly, both intellectually and emotionally. It is a story of an examined life, albeit one looked at when time has all but run out. It is a film that hits deep enough that it makes me reexamine my own life and the lives of others around me. Read a review of "Ikiru" on DVD.

Review: "In America" DVD

I found "In America" to be one of the most emotionally engaging movies I have ever seen. Read a review of this film.

Review: "In the Bedroom" DVD

I recently watched this film at home on DVD, and I really liked the first two-thirds of it, where it is essentially a hard-hitting drama about an American family dealing with tragedy. But eventually the movie took a turn into film-noir/thriller territory that was too abrupt for me. Read a brief DVD review and overview of this movie.

Review: "Insomnia" DVD

I found the psychological thriller "Insomnia" compelling throughout and particularly enjoyed Al Pacino’s performance in the leading role. Read my a brief review and DVD overview of "Insomnia."

Review: "Insomniac With Dave Attell Uncensored Vol. 2" DVD

I found "The Best of 'Insomniac With Dave Attell' Uncensored Vol. 2" to be funny, unpredictable, and strange. I was especially impressed by the show’s use of a cinema vérité style to cover a late-night milieu that often seems both true-to-life and surreal. Read a review of "The Best of 'Insomniac With Dave Attell' Uncensored Vol. 2" on DVD.

Review: "It Came From Outer Space"

Although "It Came From Outer Space" has a B-movie sensibility, I was pleasantly surprised at how good-looking and thought-provoking it is. Read my DVD review and overview of "It Came From Outer Space."

Read my DVD review and overview of "Joy Ride," a taught thriller with a B-movie sensibility.

Review: "Jules and Jim" DVD

Of all the films I've ever seen, "Jules and Jim" is one of my favorites. It is superb, both in terms of artistic content and entertainment qualities. I've watched it at least half a dozen times, both on videotape and on the big screen in art-house revival, and I've never seen it looking better than on the Fox Lorber DVD. Read a review of "Jules and Jim" on DVD.
