Nicolas Cage stars in this pulpy, idiosyncratic film directed by Werner Herzog. It has no relation to the 1992 Bad Lieutenant starring Harvey Keitel, except that the protagonist in both movies is a drug-addicted police detective who behaves outrageously. In Port of Call New Orleans, Terence McDonagh (Cage) investigates the murder of five Senegalese illegal immigrants in a drug-related case. He also has a high-class hooker girlfriend (Eva Mendes) and runs up big debts gambling on sports. He ends up with thugs and Internal Affairs after him, and he hallucinates iguanas.
