DVD Pick: "Eternal
Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"
"Eternal
Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" is one of the best films I've ever seen about
trying to get back together after a bad breakup. I found Jim Carrey as the shy
Joel and Kate Winslet as the free-spirited Clementine to be very appealing romantic
leads. Read

DVD Pick: "Nosferatu"
Your
wife has a beautiful neck, says the Count to the man who has brought him some
real estate documents in Murnau's Nosferatu, the earliest important screen adaptation
of Stoker's novel Dracula. I would characterize Murnau's version of the story
as an allegorical tale about a love triangle formed by a young married couple
and a vampire. I don't consider the movie to be scary in a panic-inducing sort
of way, but I do find it eerie, unsettling, and haunting. Read a review of this
movie on DVD.

Pick: "Mean Streets"
Years
ago, I saw Martin Scorsese's "Mean Streets" in a theater and loved it.

Truffaut's
"The 400 Blows" is a lyrical and accessible movie that appears on most

- "The 400 Blows" DVD
Review
In The 400 Blows, the 28-year-old Truffaut created
one of cinemas most memorable protagonists in Antoine Doinel, a boy of about
14. The film is semi-autobiographical, and I imagine thats one of the reasons
it has such a strong emotional pull. Read a short
review of of this DVD movie.
08/04/04
- DVD Pick: "Breathless"
"So I'll get the money. I'll
ask Patricia yes or no. And then
Milano, Genova, Roma!" says Michel
(Jean-Paul Belmondo) as he speeds towards Paris in a stolen car. But it turns
out he has to put his plans to go to Italy on hold for a few days while he gets
the money. During that time he pursues a romantic relationship with Patricia (Jean
Seberg), and I see their story of doomed love as being at the heart of Jean-Luc
Godard's "Breathless" (1960).

-"Breathless"

Review
"Breathless" is a landmark French New Wave film and one of the most
influential movies in cinema history. I find it one of the most entertaining of
the great movies because it is fast-paced, witty, and above all romantic.
07/28/04
- DVD Pick: "The Dreamers"
Bernardo Bertolucci's
English-language "The Dreamers" (2003) is not as deep or resonant as
some of his other movies, but I nonetheless found it reasonably entertaining.
I was impressed by the films beautiful visual style, and I enjoyed its allusions
to old movies and the events in Paris in 1968. Read a full-length

- Pick of the Week: "Meet Me in St. Louis" DVD
Judy Garland
is at her most winsome in "Meet Me in St. Louis" (1944), the glorious
Technicolor movie that ushered in the golden age of the MGM musical. I think the
film would be worth seeing just for the production number "The Trolley Song"
alone, and Garland's haunting rendition of "Have Yourself a Merry Little
Christmas" is unforgettable. At last this great classic movie gets the DVD

- "Runaway
Jury" DVD Review and Preview
"Runaway Jury" is unabashedly
pulpy, but very entertaining. I'd never mistake this movie for a work of art,
but it is a work of high craft. And the level of craft helped make this film so
enjoyable, including the charismatic performances of Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman,
and John Cusack. Read a review
and preview of "Runaway Jury," coming to DVD on February 17, 2004.

- "Lost
in Translation" DVD Review
I loved the bittersweet mix of
comedy and drama in "Lost in Translation," along with the evocative
Tokyo location shooting, which set a mood that drew me into the story. The film
conveyed what it means for two people who are adrift to find each other, even
if only for a little while. But whatever the cause, it was the feeling of realness
in Lost in Translation that made it a brilliant movie. Read a review

- "Xena:
Warrior Princess - Season Three" DVD Review and Preview
Some
episodes didn't draw me in completely, and the shows tongue-in-cheek campiness
often undermined dramatic momentum. However, that being said, this TV show can
be entertaining, and I enjoyed watching "Xena: Warrior Princess Season
Three" on DVD even more than the season two DVDs. Read a review
and preview of "Xena:
Warrior Princess - Season Three," coming to DVD on February 10, 2004.
02/04/04 - Pick
of the Week: "The Rules of the Game" DVD
I've
enjoyed watching my VHS copy of Jean Renoir's "The Rules of the Game"
over the last several years, and now I'm thrilled to own the Criterion Collection
DVD version. I think Renoir's deep-focus photography, unerring sense of composition,
and fluid visual style are ideally suited to the film's story. Read a full-length

Rules of the Game" on DVD.

- "Angel
Season Three" DVD Review and Preview
This was one of
the better seasons of Angel that Ive seen on DVD. However, although
there were imaginative aspects to many of the episodes, I thought that the third
season of Angel was uneven. I was entertained at times, but the show
didnt always draw me in completely. But, all in all, the DVDs were worth
watching. I predict that this TV shows many fans will enjoy the DVD set
even more than I did. Read a review

- "Ikiru"
DVD Review
I
see "Ikiru" as a thought-provoking meditation on what it means to live,
and I believe that is what makes it resonate so strongly, both intellectually
and emotionally. It is a story of an examined life, albeit one looked at when
time has all but run out. It is a film that hits deep enough that it makes me
reexamine my own life and the lives of others around me. Read

Although "American Wedding" offers little other than entertainment,
