12/27/03 - "Jules and Jim" DVD Review
Of all the films I've ever seen, "Jules and Jim" is one of my favorites. It is superb, both in terms of artistic content and entertainment qualities. I've watched it at least half a dozen times, both on videotape and on the big screen in art-house revival, and I've never seen it looking better than on the Fox Lorber DVD. Read a review of "Jules and Jim" on DVD.

12/24/03 - Pick of the Week: "Seabiscuit" DVD
"Seabiscuit," based on the best-selling nonfiction book by Laura Hillenbrand, is one of the most entertaining films I've seen in a long time. Featuring fine performances by Jeff Bridges, Tobey Maguire, and Chris Cooper, it's a terrific piece of Americana. I really enjoyed watching the movie on DVD, which also provides a number of worthwhile bonus materials. Read a full-length review of “Seabiscuit” on DVD.

12/18/03 - Top 10 DVDs Released in 2003
So many good DVDs were released in 2003 that I find it difficult to choose the ten best. Nevertheless, I've compiled a list of ten of my favorites. Since 2003 was such a strong year for DVD releases of some of the true gems of the cinematic art form, this list is comprised entirely of masterworks of world cinema and classic English-language movies. Please note that the year in parentheses refers to the film’s original theatrical release. The movies are listed in alphabetical order.

12/17/03 - Pick of the Week: “La Strada” DVD
While “La Strada” lacks the complexity and audaciousness of some of Fellini’s later movies, it is nonetheless a charming, accessible, and poetic film that no cineaste should miss, and I’m delighted that Criterion Collection has released it on DVD. Read a full-length review of “La Strada” on DVD.

12/16/03 - "Seabiscuit" DVD Review
I was pleasantly surprised at how emotionally involving "Seabiscuit" was. The movie has a rip-roaring story well-told in an old-fashioned way, and to my mind what makes it really come alive is compelling acting and well-developed characters, along with a strong sense of time and place. Read a review of "Seabiscuit" on DVD.

12/13/03 - "La Strada" DVD Review
Featuring an unforgettable Chaplinesque performance by lead actress Giulietta Masina, Fellini's lyricism, and a memorable musical score by Nino Rota, "La Strada" is one of my favorite Fellini films. This is a movie no cineaste should miss, and Criterion Collection has done a great job on the DVD set. Read a review of "La Strada" on DVD.

12/10/03 - "KISS - Symphony: The DVD" Review
Especially with the added appeal of having the band KISS being accompanied by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, this was both an intriguing and entertaining concert preserved on DVD. Given that the visual and theatrical nature of KISS is more compelling than the way they sound, this DVD set is a way to enjoy this concert even more fully than is possible by simply listening to a music CD. Read a short review of "KISS - Symphony: The DVD."

12/10/03 - Pick of the Week: "Singin' in the Rain" DVD
To my mind, few movie musicals can even come close to the feeling of enchantment that "Singin' in the Rain" delivers. Both the sound and picture quality on the DVD are exceptional, adding to the delight of watching this masterpiece. In addition, the bonus materials enormously enhanced my enjoyment of the box set. Read a full-length review of "Singin' in the Rain" on DVD.

Read a review and preview of "Firefly – The Complete Series," coming to DVD as a four-disc set on December 9, 2003.

12/07/03 - "Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Season Five" DVD Review and Preview
The fifth season of the TV show "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" has an effective and entertaining mix of comedy, horror, and drama, but it also can be a little uneven. Some episodes work a lot better than others, but overall it was worth watching on DVD. Read a review and preview of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer- Season Five," coming to DVD as a six-disc set on December 9, 2003.

12/07/03 - "Pearl Harbor" DVD Review
"Pearl Harbor" is a reasonably entertaining action movie about the Japanese attack on Oahu of December 7, 1941, but it's portrayal of human relationships is unconvincing. Read a full-length review of "Pearl Harbor" on DVD.

11/26/03 - Pick of the Week: "Tokyo Story" DVD
Universal in theme, humanistic, and accessible, "Tokyo Story" is one of the greatest masterpieces of world cinema. To my mind, this movie’s incredible power comes from its seeming simplicity, which allows emotions to build slowly and subtly, much as they do in real life. It's a mark of Ozu's genius that by the time the film reaches its end, it moves me with a power that feels more like reality experienced than make-believe. Read a full-length review of "Tokyo Story" on DVD.

11/12/03 - Pick of the Week: "Apu Trilogy" DVD Review
In April, 2002, it was my privilege to see the "Apu Trilogy" on the big screen at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and it was one of the highlights of my moviegoing life. On October 28, 2003, Sony Pictures Classics released separately the three films that make up the trilogy on three DVDs that I give my highest possible recommendation. The "Apu Trilogy" is a beautiful, moving, and humanistic masterwork of world cinema, and every time I see it, I am reminded of film's potential as an art form. 11/03/03 - "The X-Files - The Complete Eighth Season" DVD Review and Preview
Season seven was David David Duchovny's last full season on "The X-Files," and the lack of his charismatic presence in many of the episodes made the season eight DVDs a bit of a disappointment to me. And yet, although this was far from being one of the show’s strongest seasons, I still enjoyed watching this TV show on DVD. Read a review and preview of "The X-Files - The Complete Eighth Season," coming to DVD as a six-disc set on November 4, 2003.

11/02/03 - "Strangers With Candy - Season Two" DVD Review and Preview
"Strangers With Candy – Season Two" on DVD is a funny, deliciously dark, and often politically incorrect spoof of "after school" TV specials. I was entertained by the show’s mix of humor and tongue-in-cheek melodrama. Read a review and preview of "Strangers With Candy - Season Two," coming to DVD as a two-disc set on November 4, 2003.

Read a short review of "The David Lean Collection" on DVD.

10/29/03 - Pick of the Week: "Dracula" (1931) DVD
There have been other movie adaptations of the Dracula story, but to my mind, nothing can top the 1931 classic starring Bela Lugosi in the title role. Lugosi has always defined Count Dracula in my mind, and no other actor can match his distinctive brand of menace. Of course, circa 1931 special effects don’t match the visual wizardry of modern movies, but I believe the eerie atmosphere this film creates in my imagination is perhaps the most potent effect ever invented. Read a full-length review of "Dracula" (1931) on DVD.

10/28/03 - New Video and DVD Releases
There are some interesting new video and DVD releases slated for October 28, 2003, including "Hulk" and "Whale Rider." In addition, we'll take a sneak peek at next week's movies on video/DVD.

Read a short review of "Dracula" (1931) on DVD.

10/27/03 - "Hercules the Legendary Journeys - Season Two" DVD Review
This television series on DVD creates a mythic world that is not at all believable, and the stories have a simplicity that is almost cartoon-like. Yet the show’s tongue-in-cheek attitude and sense of good-natured fun is hard to resist. Read a review of "Hercules the Legendary Journeys - Season Two" on DVD.

10/26/03 - "The Best of 'Insomniac With Dave Attell' Uncensored Vol. 2" DVD Review
I found "The Best of 'Insomniac With Dave Attell' Uncensored Vol. 2" to be funny, unpredictable, and strange. I was especially impressed by the show’s use of a cinema vérité style to cover a late-night milieu that often seems both true-to-life and surreal. Read a review of "The Best of 'Insomniac With Dave Attell' Uncensored Vol. 2" on DVD.

10/22/03 - Pick of the Week: "Whale Rider" DVD
I think "Whale Rider" (2002) is terrific as a feel-good film, but to me, it's a good movie that misses being a great one. It simplifies complex issues, losing emotional depth in the process. Still, the sheer cinematic beauty of the film makes up for a lot, as does the charismatic performance of child actress Keisha Castle-Hughes. This seems to me to be one of the few movies that appeal to most viewers in any age bracket. Read a full-length review of "Whale Rider" on DVD.

10/21/03 - New Video and DVD Releases
There are some interesting video/DVD releases slated for October 21, 2003, including "28 Days Later," "Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle," and "It Runs in the Family." In addition, we'll take a sneak peek at next week's movies on video/DVD.

10/19/03 - "Dark Angel – Season Two" DVD Review and Preview
I enjoyed watching the season two DVDs, and especially liked the sci-fi noir feeling of the shows and the inventive imagination that I’ve come to expect in this TV series created by James Cameron. Read a review of "Dark Angel – Season Two" on DVD. Please note "Dark Angel – Season Two" comes to DVD on October 21, 2003.

10/18/03 - "Whale Rider" DVD Review and Preview
This is a terrific feel-good film, but it simplifies complex issues, losing emotional depth in the process. The film’s cinematic beauty makes up for a lot, as does Keisha Castle-Hughes’ performance. Read a review and preview of "Whale Rider" on DVD. Please note "Whale Rider" comes to DVD on October 28, 2003.

10/15/03 - Pick of the Week: "28 Days Later" DVD
Although the dynamite first act of 28 Days Later doesn't deliver on its promises, I still recommend this movie because it is a compelling drama with genuinely scary moments. Read a full-length review of "28 Days Later" on DVD.

10/14/03 - "The Matrix Reloaded" DVD Review
I was dazzled by the visual sense of "The Matrix Reloaded" and by its highly stylized action sequences, but I didn't become emotionally involved because the film was more about style than substance. Read a review of "The Matrix Reloaded" on DVD.

10/08/03 - Pick of the Week: "A Mighty Wind" DVD
I think it’s a good idea for me to state up front that I’m a fan of writer-director-actor Christopher Guest. I’ve always loved his quirky, satiric style, especially in “Waiting for Guffman” and “Best in Show.” Although I got a lot of laughs out of “A Mighty Wind,” the edge of the humor in this film is a little gentler than I expected. Read a full-length review of "A Mighty Wind" on DVD.

There are some interesting video/DVD releases slated for October 7, 2003, including "Down With Love," "Hollywood Homicide," "The In-Laws," "The Italian Job," "The Lion King," and "Willard." In addition, we'll take a sneak peek at next week's movies on video/DVD.

10/06/03 - Review: "A Mighty Wind" DVD
There are lots of laughs in "A Mighty Wind," but the edge of the humor in this film is a little gentler than in some of Guest’s others. He’s made funnier films, but this is one of my favorites. Read a short review and DVD overview of "A Mighty Wind" on DVD.

10/03/03 - "Wrong Turn" DVD DVD Review and Preview
Although this film did have a couple of moments that truly startled me, overall "Wrong Turn" was so predictable, campy, and over-the-top, it was a hard film to take seriously. Read a review and preview of "Wrong Turn," coming to DVD on October 14, 2003.

10/01/03 - Pick of the Week: "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" DVD
Although it’s very silly and sometimes taxes my patience, I’ve loved “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” for years because of its dark humor, irreverent imagination, and quirky originality. I recently watched this film on the two-disc Collector’s Edition DVD set, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that the movie was just as entertaining as I had remembered. However, the Collector’s Edition differs from an earlier DVD offering only in that it provides a paperback copy of the complete screenplay and a collectible film cel senitype. Read a full-length DVD review of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail."

09/26/03 - "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" DVD Review
I’ve seen it many times before, but there’s always a joke I’ve missed or a sequence I love and simply want to see yet another time. Read a short DVD review of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail."

09/24/03 - Pick of the Week: "Bowling for Columbine" DVD
While I don’t entirely endorse Michael Moore’s views and methods, I rate “Bowling for Columbine” the best documentary I’ve ever seen. Read a full-length review of "Bowling for Columbine" on DVD.

09/23/03 - "Lewis Black: Unleashed" DVD Review
I thoroughly enjoyed "Lewis Black: Unleashed," and my only complaint is that it was so funny, I hated for it to end. The best part of the ”DVD for me is that Black’s mind runs so fast and bright that he’s truly unpredictable. And there’s nothing funnier than what you can’t see coming. Read a review of "Lewis Black: Unleashed" on DVD.

09/20/03 - "Bowling for Columbine" DVD Review
Michael Moore's brilliant, darkly comic, controversial Bowling for Columbine won the Academy Award for Best Documentary. Although it's a difficult film to watch in many ways, I think it is the best documentary I've ever seen. Read a short review of "Bowling for Columbine" on DVD.

09/17/03 - Pick of the Week: "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" DVD
To my mind, this film offers a fascinating look into a man’s life and the pop culture of an era—both of which were badly in need of a reality check. Read a full-length review of "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" on DVD.

09/12/03 - "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" DVD Review
George Clooney makes an assured directorial debut with this biopic based on Chuck Barris’ cult book, and Charlie Kaufman’s witty script strikes the right balance between the comic and the tragic. Read a short review of "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" on DVD.

09/06/03 - "Bend It Like Beckham" DVD Review and Preview
"Bend It Like Beckham" sometimes falls into clichés, but its heart is in the right place, giving it an earnestness that drew me in. The movie is rather lightweight, but it really lifted my spirits. Read a DVD review and preview of "Bend It Like Beckham," coming to DVD on September 30, 2003.

09/06/03 - "24 – Season Two" DVD Review and Preview
This smart and often gripping mix of suspense and drama immediately drew me in. I am intrigued by the unusual dramatic structure, which defies my ordinary expectations of a TV drama. Read a DVD review and preview of "24 – Season Two," coming to DVD on September 9, 2003.

09/05/03 - "Xena: Warrior Princess - Season Two" DVD Review
I was entertained by the interesting mix of myth-inspired stories and fast-moving action adventure in "Xena: Warrior Princess - Season Two." I think that the show’s greatest asset is Lucy Lawless, whose charisma, strong-willed persona, and sex appeal gives her character more credibility than seems to be in the scripts themselves. Read a brief DVD review and overview of "Xena: Warrior Princess - Season Two."

09/03/03 - "Family Guy - Volume Two" DVD Review and Preview
Although its brand of humor may not be to everyone's taste and the show is a little uneven, when everything works right, the "Family Guy" is fast, smart, and side-splittingly funny. Read a brief DVD review/preview of "Family Guy - Volume Two," coming to DVD on September 9, 2003.

09/02/03 - New Video and DVD Releases
The two major releases on video and DVD this week are "Identity" and "A Man Apart." Other new releases include "Alias - The Complete First Season," "Angel - Season Two," C.S.I. We'll also take a sneak peek at next week's movies on video/DVD.

08/30/03 - "The Dancer Upstairs" DVD Review and Preview
This film is slow-moving and murky at times, but I found it thought-provoking, and I was intrigued by its main character as played by Javier Bardem. Read a review and preview of "The Dancer Upstairs," coming to DVD on September 23, 2003.

08/27/03 - Pick of the Week: "The Lord of the Rings" DVD
I found “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” (2002) to be highly cinematic moviemaking and mythic storytelling. However, it’s basically an action-adventure movie, and for me some of the action sequences became tedious. Although I thought “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” (2001) was a more satisfying film, perhaps because it did a little more with character, I still found “The Two Towers” well worth watching on DVD. Read a full-length review of "The Lord of the Rings" on DVD.

08/26/03 - "The Lord of the Rings" DVD Review and Overview

08/20/03 - Pick of the Week: "Chicago" DVD
This movie came alive for me because of its satirical treatment of Roxie’s legal case as a three-ring circus with the public, the press, and a manipulative lawyer each occupying their own ring. This is the reason that, despite being a period piece, “Chicago” still has bite and resonance for today’s audiences. Read a full-length review of "Chicago" on DVD.

08/19/03 - "Chicago" DVD Review and Overview
I think “Chicago,” despite its period setting, has bite and resonance today because of the cult of celebrity that pop culture has always attached to murder trials. Although the film is not fully satisfying as a musical and is unnecessarily choppy, I found it enormously entertaining and laugh-out-loud funny throughout. Read a brief DVD review and overview of "Chicago."

08/19/03 - New Video and DVD Releases

08/15/03 - "The Simpsons - Season Three" DVD Review and Preview
“I’ve always been a fan of "The Simpsons" and having a chance to see the third season on DVD was a special treat.
