- Pick of the Week: "War and Peace"
DVD
I cant
say "War and Peace" (1956) is an example of great filmmaking, but
I do think it's worth watching. I have to admit the movie doesn't have a compelling
narrative drive, but I still enjoyed it as historical spectacle. I believe if
you can watch this film in the same mindset required by silent movies or grand
opera, you'll probably find it a rewarding experience. Read a full-length review
of "War and Peace" on DVD.

- Buying Your First DVD Player
Not so very long
ago, I watched all my movies at home on videotape. I was comfortable with videotapes
and my VCR, and I figured that since the important thing was the artistic quality
of the movies, it wouldn't matter much whether I watched them on videotape or
DVD. But then I took the DVD plunge, and now I won't rent or buy anything on
videotape if I can get it on DVD. Here's what to keep in mind when buying your
first DVD player.

- Top Picks - Billy Wilder on Video and DVD
Oscar-winning filmmaker
Billy Wilder died on March 27, 2002, at age 95. I've always marveled at how
his comedies sparkle with dark humor and sharply cynical wit, but he was equally
adept at creating fascinating mixes of drama and film-noir in movies such as
Sunset Boulevard and Double Indemnity. Billy Wilder
may be gone, but his films and characters will always live in my memory. He
was the creative force behind some of my favorite films.
