"In the Bedroom" DVD
DVD Cover

Guide Rating -
Pros  •  Top-notch acting by leading and supporting actors
•  Evocative location shooting in Maine
•  Many moments of compelling drama
Cons  •  Not a character-driven drama as some ads imply
•  Story transitions sometimes seemed too abrupt
•  DVD has no special features of any consequence
The Bottom Line - I recently watched this film at home on DVD, and I really liked the first two-thirds of it, where it is essentially a hard-hitting drama about an American family dealing with tragedy. But eventually the movie took a turn into film-noir/thriller territory that was too abrupt for me.

"In the Bedroom" DVD
Although it's not a perfect film, I think that outstanding acting, compelling moments of drama, and cinematic location shooting make "In the Bedroom" well worth watching on DVD. This movie was a Best Picture Oscar nominee, and three actors—Sissy Spacek, Tom Wilkinson, and Marisa Tomei—received Oscar nominations for their performances in it. Matt Fowler (Wilkinson) is a doctor in a small Maine town, where he lives with his wife Ruth (Spacek), a high school teacher. Their son Frank (Nick Stahl) is home from college for the summer and is involved in a romance with the thirty-something Natalie (Tomei), a working-class mother of two who is estranged from her husband. Then one of the characters is killed, and the film becomes the story of how Matt and Ruth deal with the aftermath of the death. I recently watched this film at home on DVD, and I really liked the first two-thirds of it, where it is essentially a hard-hitting drama about an American family dealing with tragedy. But eventually the movie took a turn into film-noir/thriller territory that was too abrupt for me.
