"Butt-Ugly Martians - Vol. 1-3" DVDs
I admit it was a guilty pleasure, but I found "Butt-Ugly Martians - Vol. 1-3" surprisingly amusing, and I even laughed out loud at times. I thought the character of Stoat Muldoon (voice of Robert Stack) was particularly funny, but perhaps this was because he was a vehicle for some sly satirical humor that was obviously thrown in for the adults in the audience.
These DVDs are aimed at kids, and since I'm not that good at evoking my inner child, I am evaluating them using my adult sensibilities. And although I had fun watching the DVDs, some things were far from perfect. In general, the plots of all of the episodes' stories failed to hold my attention. Some of the music grated on my nerves. I have to admit that I've been spoiled by the beautiful state-of-the-art animation in some movies such as "Shrek." I thought the animation in "Butt-Ugly Martians - Vol. 1-3" looked deliberately artless. The animation seemed to emulate the look of really bad computer-generated animation. I have to wonder if the animators hoped this would give it a cool and unusual look to a child's eyes. To my adult eyes, much of "Butt-Ugly Martians - Vol. 1-3" looked hideous.
I give the "Butt-Ugly Martians - Vol. 1-3" (2002) DVDs a marginal recommendation, but I expect many kids will enjoy it much more than I did.
