"Dragonfly"
DVD |
| Guide Rating - |
 |
 |
| Pros |
Kevin Costner is charismatic
Cast includes actors who won Oscars for their
roles in other films
Supernatural thriller with a good ending |
 |
| Cons |
Characters are insufficiently developed
Film doesn't have much emotional impact
Plot drags, especially in film's second act |
 |
|
The Bottom Line -
"Dragonfly" is overly long and the characters in the
movie are insufficiently developed. Even its talented cast couldn't
breathe much life into their roles given the script. However,
this movie wasn't as bad as some of the reviews led me to expect.

"Dragonfly" DVD
Joe Darrow (Kevin Costner) is a Chicago emergency room physician. He is stricken with grief when his wife Emily is accidentally killed while on a volunteer mission. Emily had a birthmark that looked like a dragonfly, and she also left behind a dragonfly paperweight. Joe visits some of Emily's pediatric oncology patients, some of whom have had near-death experiences and draw a squiggly cross. Eventually Joe has to figure out whether he's going crazy or his late wife is trying to communicate with him from beyond the grave.
This movie wasn't as bad as I expected. The length of the film and the weak character development are what keep "Dragonfly" from being fully satisfying. This film could have benefited from some drastic editing. Even its talented cast couldn't breathe life into their roles given the script. Although I can't fully recommend "Dragonfly," fans of Kevin Costner and of supernatural thrillers will probably enjoy it.
