DVD |
| Guide Rating - |

 |
 |
| Pros |
• Good acting and high production values
• Increases public awareness of schizophrenia
• Feel-good movie |
 |
| Cons |
• More of a fable than a character study
• Loses momentum in second half of film
• Takes extreme liberties with Sylvia Nasar's book |
 |
|
The Bottom Line -
I thought that "A Beautiful Mind" played much better on DVD than it did when I saw it during its theatrical release. I found it to be more of a fable than a character study, although Russell Crowe's performance adds dimension to a character who is scripted as more mythic than real.

"A Beautiful Mind" DVD Review
"A Beautiful Mind" played much better on the small screen than it did when I saw it during its theatrical release. The movie is a biopic about brilliant, but troubled, math genius John Nash. I found it to be more of a fable than a character study, although Russell Crowe's performance adds dimension to a character who is scripted as more mythic than real. The movie begins in the late 1940s with Nash as a young mathematician at Princeton, where he does some astonishing original work. He then takes a job at M.I.T. and meets and marries an attractive grad student (Jennifer Connelly). However, Nash is suffering from schizophrenia, and his life falls apart. Recovery is difficult and takes many years, but in 1994 Nash wins a Nobel Prize. |
