"Vanilla Sky" Tom Cruise, Penelope Cruz, and Cameron Diaz
star in Cameron Crowe's "Vanilla Sky," an English-language adaptation
of the Spanish-language movie "Open Your Eyes." David (Cruise) is a
playboy who has inherited a publishing empire. He has a sexual relationship with
Julie (Diaz), but becomes attracted to Sofia (Cruz). After David spends a night
with Sofia, he encounters Julie, who gives him a ride and drives off a bridge.
When David comes to, he finds his face has been severely disfigured, and there
are also scenes where David is questioned by a psychiatrist (Kurt Russell) about
a murder. "Vanilla Sky" blurs reality and fantasy, veering into sci-fi
territory. Most people have difficulty understanding this puzzling movie in a
single viewing. I liked Tom Cruise's performance and thought there was good romantic
chemistry between him and Penelope Cruz. Also, I really enjoyed the rock music
on the soundtrack. The DVD's commentary track by Cameron Crowe is one of the best
I've heard. |
