"On the Edge" (2000) Jonathan (Cillian Murphy) is a troubled
19-year-old who steals a car and drives it off a cliff. He is sent away for a
three-month stay at a psychiatric hospital, where he is under the care of Dr.
Figure (Stephen Rea). Jonathan likes the doctor's laid-back approach and tells
him he is "very Robin Williams." While at the hospital, Jonathan falls in love
with the beautiful Rachel (Tricia Vessey), who is sexually excited by the sight
of her own blood. He also becomes good friends with the fatally tormented Toby
(Jonathan Jackson). I like the performances by the young actors in "On the Edge"
and found the depiction of life in a psychiatric hospital quite interesting. The
scene showing the inmates' New Year's Eve party is memorable, and I thoroughly
enjoyed the movie's moody rock music. "On the Edge" is not a great film, but it
definitely does have its moments. | | |
