"Close-Up" DVD
"Close-Up" is a 1990 Farsi-language film that was written,
directed, and edited by Abbas Kiarostami, who has since become well-known
among cinephiles all over the world. Based on a true story and shot
in a semi-documentary style, the movie chronicles the tale of an unemployed
man who persuades a well-to-do family that he is a filmmaker and begins
preparations for making a film in their home, borrowing money from
them along the way. The family becomes suspicious and calls the police,
resulting in a trial, and "Close-Up" shows what comes out
of all this. I really admire Kiarostami's humanistic approach to the
people in his film, and I like the elegant way he turns this seemingly
simple story into a richly textured meditation on the relationship
between cinema and society. |
